?Replacement windows? usually refer to new windows that mount within the frame of the existing wood window. They are typically made without a structural frame; instead, they rely on the strength of the original window for support.

The Truth About Replacment Windows and Storm Windows
Replacement windows take the place of existing windows when they have become deteriorated, drafty or non-functional. The expressed opinion of some that replacing wood windows in a house built prior to 1979 with windows that are appropriate in appearance could somehow cause harm is baseless. On the contrary, leaving lead painted old energy inefficient windows which might also mold which could cause numerouse diseases is in fact the case. Another rediculouse claim is that a storm window can be installed into an old houses frame and make a signifagant difference in energy -false. Modern storm windows are made out of aluminum or plastic, which expands and contracts with temperature, but none at all with humidity (like glass) and not like wood which expands and contracts with humidity and hardly at all with temperature.
Most wood now comes from genetically altered rapid growth trees that have no condensed cells, only big fat new ones which keep in sap and are a haven for mold. Storm windows do not hold their seal and cause a humidiy build up between the storm and the leaky old window and cause actual damage by rot and perhaps mold on the newer genetically altered wood. New replacement windows may greatly decrease energy loss and outside noise, compared to a single-pane window.
The use of energy star as a measurement for weather or not a window is good is like saying in order to be labeled a high jumper one must clear 3 feet. Sure you can order windows with no heat reflective coatings meant for your garage that would not meet energy star requirements, and there are unscrupulous contractors who will sell them and later disappear. The majority of newer replacement windows carry the "E-Star" rating for home efficiency, and may be custom ordered to meet the customers preferences, both functionally, and aesthetically.
While most replacement windows are used in residential applications, there are numerous commercial applications as well, such as storefronts, offices, and workshops. There even some rated for medium commercail use and can be used in high rise condos. Some can be made with triple pane glass and even the more dense krypton gas. Some also have insulated frames and even insulated sashes. Some windows even meet ALL of the Miami Dade hurricane standards for all sizes and styles of windows including the projectile portion. These windows have the laminated glass option and extra strong versions of the highest grade of window hardware. Of course they are made of virgin vinyl and pure fiberglass rods for support at the critical areas.
If they had vinyl for windows 100 years ago they would have used it by preference because they built things when they could with the best available materials for the job. Not all vinyl is equal and the the ones who know the most about a particular products longetivity and performance are the manufacturers and they are forced to tell the truth in the small print disclaimers in their warranties.
If the manufacturer is unwilling to cover a certain part of the window after a certain period of time, they are not betting on their own product and neither should you. Check for goofy wording such as a limitation on moving parts, which later you will find means any part of any window including glass package seal failure even though they said "Lifetime" in big letters, or "20years" or more. Different states identify "lifetime" as either 7 or 15 years for instance. Look carefully what they say that on "seal failure", the number one issue with modern windows, and the most expensive to repair. Often they say "The manufacturer will replace the sash or the glass (this means "either/ or" which is reasonable if they change the design that they might just send the glass pack). Some manufacturers say that if there is a seal failure the glass or the sash will be replaced at the manufacture's discetion" (this means they will replace one or the other if they feel like it). Labor is rarely covered by manufacture's warranty and if they had a big issue and covered labor years in the future they would go broke, so what good is that warranty. The remodeling companies warranty is most likely backed by nothing and "workmanship" means "proper installation" and is by default legally one year per 2006IRC.
Unless you have worked for one of the largest home improvement companies and only the highest quality vinyl and wood windows and vinyl and metal storm doors and have won your state's business ethics award out of 20,000 businesses in the state, beating out a hospice as a finalist, leave this definition and other information alone.
